The Man

The Man

Aníbal Augusto Milhais

(Valongo, 1895 – Valongo de Milhais,1970).

Nicknamed Milhais, after the battle of La Lys on April 9th, 1918, in view of his bravery, the commander embraced him, saying “You are Milhais, but you are worth millions”. From here everyone knew him as the “Soldier Millions”.

You are Milhais, but you are worth millions!

Farmer, Hunter, Military

I was poor, I had no threshing floor and with my work and some favours I received, I managed to buy some rows that gave me rye, potatoes, wine and even pasture for raising calves that at the end of the year gave me some change. And believe me, I am happy to know that I am the owner of half a dozen inches of land.”

(Aníbal Milhões, in the newspaper “Comércio do Porto”, May 1944)

Born on July 9th, 1895, and died on June 3rd, 1970, in the Parish of Valongo (later named after him, “Valongo de Milhais”), he had to work to support himself from a very young age.

Father of eleven children, he sought his livelihood in agriculture, collecting the fruits of his land through hard work with his wife Teresa Milhais.

He was also dedicated to hunting, namely rabbits, partridges and hares – in fact, the fact that he was an excellent hunter was fundamental for his performance as a marksman and soldier on April 9th, 1918, in Flanders…
