Murça

Murça is essentially an agricultural municipality, where the wine and olive growing sectors are of the utmost importance.

History

The origin of the Municipality of Murça goes back to the period that preceded the Portuguese nationality, according to the inquiries of D. Afonso II – the first municipality charter was being by D. Sancho II, on 8th May 1224.

D. Afonso III, on the 10th of January 1268, confirmed the Charter, as well as those of the 18th of April 1304 and the 9th of May 1512, granted by D. Dinis and D. Manuel, respectively.

Murça belongs to the Douro Demarcated Region in the North of Portugal and is an excellent producer of wine, fruit and other legacies of renowned quality, crafted by the hands of farmers such as Aníbal Milhais.

Trás-os-Montes “A Wonderful Kingdom”

I will tell you about a Wonderful Kingdom. Although many people say no, there have always been and will be wonderful kingdoms in this world. What is needed, to see them, is for the eyes not to lose their original virginity in the face of reality, and for the heart not to hesitate afterwards. Well, what I intend to show, mine and that of all those who want to deserve it, not only exists, but is one of the most beautiful ones imaginable. It starts right away because it is at the top of Portugal, like the nests are at the top of trees so that the distance makes them more impossible and desirable.”

Miguel Torga – Portuguese Writer about the Region

Murça’s Natural Heritage

Murça is in the Trás-os-Montes region – yours towns and villages are lands of great contrasts and greater warmth – hot summers and freezing winters.

In this warm land of Trás-os-Montes, the olive groves of the Olive Oil Route extend, as well as the wine-growing landscape of the Alto Douro – from the cities, towns and villages that, on one side, overlook the Douro, where the “wine must” of the world flows and on the other they shelter in the shadows of the olive trees where the golden oil is born.

The green and granite forests of Serra da Garraia or Parque Florestal de Mascanho are “sprinkled” by chestnut groves such as those in Jou and Vilares places.
